Preserving an Xbox 360?

What are some ways I can prolong the life of my Xbox 360. I have heard many rumors about positioning the system, buying intercoolers, timing usage, etc. Which are true, and which are false? Please give me some advice on how to best protect and prolong the life of an Xbox 360 Elite.

The main problem I want to prevent is the Red Ring of Death. I bought the extended warranty, but I still want to know everything there is to know about protecting the system.

Do not tell me to buy a PS3 or Wii instead. I do not care about why a PS3 or Wii is worse or better. I have a 360 because I wanted one, I just want to know how to keep it working well.

1. The placement is important. Place the console and the power brick on a hard, open surface. Also, do not place it too close to any heat-generating devices. May be a 1/2 foot distance is good enough if you are placing it next to your TV. But what I would do is feel the air around the area first with the TV and other devices (e.g. amplifier...) switched on for about 30 mins: if it's relatively cool then the console and power brick can be placed there. Otherwise, try a different area

2. Microsoft never suggests any inter-cooler and I think there is no official product endorsed by Microsoft

3. Call Microsoft support for advice on where to place the console

4. Perform some regular maintenance on the outside of the console to remove trapped dust especially near the air vents

5. And lastly, my opinion is that if the console is bound to break then it will. And it's better that it does that when it is still under warranty so that you can get an exchange which will last.
