What is extended car warranty?

First, a correction: A "warranty" is something provided by a manufacturer that costs you nothing. You are talking about "purchasing" additional coverage, which is called an "extended service contract". You can't buy a warranty.

Second, you can purchase an extended service contract for any new (except some high-end exotics) and most used (usually up to 10 years old and 100,000 miles) car.

Be VERY careful about buying ANY extended service contract over the internet. They go out of business, refuse to pay, don't answer the phone, and look for any way they can to get out of paying claims.

Ever see the ads on TV for US Fidelis? Said they were better and cheaper than dealer contracts. Sponsored Rusty Wallace's race car. Guess what? Gone. Kaput. Bankrupt.

ONLY purchase an extended service contract from the manufacturer or it's direct agent. Buying a GM product, for example. Only buy GMAC's ESC. That is the ONLY way you will know that repairs can be done at any dealer without any hassles.

Go to the dealer, ask to see the Finance Manager, and review available options. Generally speaking, the older the car and the more miles it has on it, the more expensive the coverage, and the fewer things covered.

READ the contract, see what is covered and what is excluded and ask plenty of questions before signing up. Basically, be a responsible buyer.

Also, most dealership plans have a 10% down, 0% interest payment option.
