Whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny that auto-tune is here to stay, at least for a little while longer. Even with Jay-Z’s recent “Death of Autotune” song, top 40 radio is still full of artists using (and abusing) the auto-tune affect. Some artists use it to correct bad pitch and others use it for the robotic effect, no matter what reason they use it the fact is that it is a popular effect in hip-hop, pop and even indie-rock that has become hugely popular, it still is and will be as controversial as George Bush or putting an aftermarket Mustang exhaust on your ride. Here is a list of some of the best auto-tune songs of the past decade.

Young Jeezy featuring Kanye West - “Put On”

One of the first instances of Kanye West using auto-tune, before “Put On” only Lil Wayne, a possibly one or two others rappers, had the audacity to use heavy auto-tune on their vocals. On one of Kanye West’s most aggressive and powerful guest verses, he layers his voice in auto-tune almost to strip it of emotional—like his words are too nakedly emotional without it. “Put On” was a huge success for both Young Jeezy and Kanye West, who would reportedly had so much fun with auto-tune on “Put On” and a remix for Lil’ Wayne’s “Lollipop” that he went on to make an entire album with the auto-tune effect.

So, about that album. Kanye went on the record as saying that he didn’t care about all the flack he got for using auto-tune because, simply and matter of factly, it was super fun to use. Kanye took his love of auto-tune and the confidence it gave him, to sing an entire record using the effect. The result was one of the most polarizing “hip-hop” records in years, “808s and Heartbreak,” a short, cold and emotionally raw breakup album from rap’s most controversial figure. When the first single “Love Lockdown” was leaked through Kanye’s own website, his fans and enemies had a field day with it. It was one of those love it or hate it moments where it at least had people talking and discussing music in intelligent ways.
